Formed in 1992, the Llangollen Diesel Group is made up of owners and volunteers who look after the heritage diesel loco fleet based at the Llangollen Railway in North Wales.
The main object of the Group is to ensure the continued operation of our heritage diesel fleet at Llangollen for the benefit of future generations. It is thanks to the open mind of the Llangollen Railway that we have been able to assemble a varied fleet of locomotives, representing several different types of manufacture and control equipment. We can show the development of British Rail locomotives from the 1955 modernisation plan right up to the present day. |

Although we consider our locomotives very much preserved, we are an essential back up support for the operation of the Llangollen Railway, from the provision of a daily yard pilot, engineering trains and providing standby cover in the event of a locomotive failure. In addition to the above, we contribute to the income of the railway by organising diesel events with our own and visiting locos. We also provide the railway with locos for driver training courses and various other types of charter work. |

Well, the answer to that is very simple. Come and join us ! We are always on the lookout for new volunteers to help out and assist us in the maintenance, restoration and operation of our locomotive fleet.

No experience is necessary whatsoever. As long as you are keen and willing to get your hands dirty there will be plenty to keep you occupied. Whether its simply cleaning a loco or assisting in a power unit swap, or topping up oil levels or even keeping our spares department tidy there will always be something to do.

All members of the group are also members of the Llangollen Railway Trust Ltd. This is a necessary requirement before any work is carried out on the Llangollen Railway, as membership covers the individual for insurance purposes. As a working member of the group, once some experience of working on our fleet has been gained, you will eventually be given the chance to get involved in the operational side of things should you wish to do so. (Subject to a medical examination). If you have ever wondered what it is like to help crew a mainline diesel loco then this is a good opportunity to find out. |
So, if you are interested and you have some spare time on your hands at weekends (generally Sundays) and you would like to help us keep our fleet running then please get in touch. Alternatively, you can also make a donation to help keep our fleet in running order. Contact us for details. |
